How Automation Frees Up Time for What Actually Matters
Many SME leaders tell the same story: days disappear into operational routines and there is no time left for strategic work. Orders are entered manually from one system to another. Reports are compiled by hand. Reminders are sent one by one.
These tasks are necessary — but they don't have to consume human time.
How to recognise a process worth automating
Good signs that a task is worth automating:
- It is done the same way every time
- It involves moving information from one place to another
- It takes time but requires no creative thinking
- It recurs weekly or more often
Typical examples include invoice pre-processing, updating customer data in a CRM, compiling weekly reports, or sending order confirmations.
Which tools to use
I always choose the tool based on the need:
PowerShell is best suited for IT environment management tasks such as user management or file processing. Fast to implement, works immediately.
Power Automate is the natural choice in Microsoft 365 environments. It connects Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and hundreds of other services without code.
n8n is the best option for more demanding integrations that connect multiple different systems. Open source, flexible, and scalable.
Where to start
I don't recommend starting with the technology. I recommend starting with the question: where does your time go most?
Once you know the answer, it is easy to evaluate which task to automate first and what the benefit will be. The first automation doesn't have to be large. Even a small time saving compounds quickly over 52 weeks.
